Marie Hammond grew up in Northern Minnesota and her love of the nature and beauty of the lake country is reflected in her paintings. She and her husband maintain a cabin in the North Country where she continues to be inspired.

Marie graduated from Bethesda Hospital School of Nursing in 1957 and later returned to the University of Minnesota where she graduated with a degree in Cross-Cultural Communications and Studio Arts in 1987.

Marie practiced nursing in the US and abroad, and with her husband, an Agricultural Economist at the University of Minnesota, she lived in Tunisia, China, Morocco, Rwanda, and Norway. Marie taught English in China and Poland and made use of her nursing skills in many settings. Much of her work is taken from those memories. Shows have exhibited Marie's work in Watermedia and mixed media, and her pen and ink drawings have appeared in University of Minnesota publications and International Student Magazine. Marie's paintings have received awards in local and national shows and are in private collections as well as in the collections at Bethesda and Regions Hospitals in St. Paul, MN. Marie's design of two large stained glass windows are installed in the Presbyterian Church of the Way in St. Paul, MN.

Combining nursing experience and art, Marie works as an art therapist at Bethesda Rehabilitation Hospital in St. Paul.

Art can be passive or active, whether painting, drawing, viewing, or discussion, and Marie finds that it can awaken the spirit and provide joy.

A studio at the Northrup King Building in Minneapolis, MN is an outlet for Marie's abstract and representational work.
